Origin and Background
"Zaojia" is a new early-maturing variety of the "Wumei" (dark plum) category, selected through bud mutation from a "Biqi" variety bayberry orchard in Lanxi, Zhejiang Province. After years of cultivation and observation, it has been officially certified as a superior forest tree variety. Since 2006, Lanxi has promoted the development of "Zaojia" through seedling propagation and top-grafting (top-working). In September 2013, it was formally recognized and named by the Zhejiang Provincial Forest Variety Appraisal Committee.
Fruit Characteristics
• Appearance: The fruit is nearly spherical with a bright, purplish-black surface and uniform coloring. The fruit stalk (pedicel) is yellow-green.
• Texture & Flavor: The flesh is relatively firm with a rich flavor.
Cultivation and Growth
"Zaojia" bayberry trees exhibit moderate vigor and a naturally dwarfed habit. In Lanxi, the fruit typically matures between late May and early June.
